Electrolysis for Sideburns

How does Electrolysis for Side Burns Work?

You may be familiar with the hair removal method electrolysis being used on arms and legs, but how does electrolysis for sideburns work? The good news is that electrolysis is an excellent hair removal method for facial hair. In fact, electrolysis was originally innovated for use on eyelashes around a century and a half ago. Electrolysis by Alison has refined the process considerably compared to the 19th century version, of course. We offer the only form of permanent hair removal for facial hair recognized by the FDA.

All About Sideburns

Sideburns, sideboards, or side whiskers are facial hair grown on the sides of the face, extending from the hairline to run parallel to or beyond the ears. Longer sideburns—that extend to the bottom of the ear—can help offset a long face or chin and they’ll also help a round face look less so.

‘Sideburns’ take their name from General Ambrose Burnside, a Civil War veteran and Rhode Island senator. He was not a great general, but we remember his luxuriant facial hair to this day. Under the rule of the Burnside, the name for the long strips of facial hair worn in front of the ears and along the cheeks were no longer called side-whiskers, but came to be called sideburns, a play on burnside.

In the 1950s, celebrities like James Dean and Elvis Presley popularized the sideburn. These days, they are sported by athletes like Bradley Wiggins and Dustin McGowan, and actors including David Tennant, Robert Pattinson, and Benedict Cumberbatch. While they are associated primarily with men, they are normal and common among many women. They have been worn by women such as Rihanna and Katy Perry, and incorporated in aesthetics as wide-ranging as Old West and cyberpunk. Unfortunately, many women consider female sideburns more masculine. They feel ashamed and abnormal because of their hair growth. At Electrolysis by Alison, we want to ensure that people feel secure about their bodies. If body hair or facial hair is making that harder, we can help.

How to Deal with Sideburns

If you are experiencing unwanted hair growth on your face, there are several ways you can approach the problem. Removing hair is a multi-billion dollar industry, and there are numerous methods of hair removal offered, all with their upsides and, unfortunately, downsides.

  • Shaving: This commonly-used method does achieve the initial goal of eradicating unwanted facial hair growth, but shaving your sideburns can lock you into a time-consuming cycle of constant maintenance. It can also come with the problems of razor burn and cuts.
  • Hair removal cream: This approach is popular with some. They apply the cream to areas where they want to chemically disintegrate hair at the skin level, leave it for a few minutes, then wash it away. While this can be effective on some areas of the body, the skin on the face is often more sensitive than elsewhere, and can be damaged by the corrosive chemicals in depilatory cream.
  • Waxing: Wax strips and other similar products are sometimes used on the face. However, there are many side effects to the procedure. Aside from the pain and bleeding that can result from broken skin, the trauma that this procedure can cause ripping hair roots out of hair follicles can result in many side effects. Ingrown hairs, rashes, and even the provocation of more terminal hairs in the treated area.
  • Laser hair removal: While laser hair removal and electrolysis have some commonalities, laser hair removal does not target individual hair follicles, simply saturating an area of skin. This can create issues such as burning, scarring, even keloids in people susceptible to them.
  • Electrolysis: This precise technique zaps individual hair follicles, disabling their ability to ever regrow new hair. The old hair falls out, root and stem, within a couple of weeks. There can be a little inflammation that lasts for a few hours but is easily managed.

Electrolysis Hair Removal for the Face

Electrolysis treatment is a cosmetic procedure that targets a small area and amount of hair in a single session. Because of the way that facial hair life cycles work, it will likely be necessary to repeat the same procedure on the same area multiple times over a period of several months in order to ensure that every active follicle in the area is dealt with. Electrolysis is extremely effective at tackling small areas such as the sideburns, upper lip, and chin. It’s perfect for people who want to put their best faces forward.
