What Is Electrolysis for Permanent Hair Removal?

Electrolysis is a hair removal treatment that involves a fine probe being inserted into hair follicles and then passing an electric charge through the surrounding cells. By targeting the hair follicle, electrolysis is suited for all types of hair and skin. Electrolysis gets rid of thin, thick and coarse hair. Your hair removal plan will have to be customized according to your body and desired results. Permanent hair removal by electrolysis is the only FDA-approved method of permanent hair removal. The FDA is responsible for protecting and promoting public health and is the regulating body for medical devices.

Electrolysis can be the perfect solution for removing stubborn body hair. Regardless of the cause of your unwanted hair growth – heredity, metabolic, or hormonal conditions – electrolysis will permanently remove unwanted hair to reveal a glowing, confident you. A professional electrologist inserts a very fine needle (usually thinner than the hair being treated) into the natural opening of the hair follicle alongside the hair shaft. A tiny amount of electrical current is then applied to destroy the hair growth cells. There are three different methods, or modalities, of electrolysis, which vary in their specifics. Medical electrolysis devices can destroy hair growth cells with chemical energy, heat energy, or both.

Can I Get Electrolysis Treatment on Sun-Damaged Skin?

Century City is no stranger to the sun’s relentless rays, which can leave a lasting impact on the skin. With its abundance of sunny days and outdoor activities, residents and visitors alike may seek effective solutions to combat and repair sun-damaged skin. So, many Century City denizens ask: can I get electrolysis for hair removal if my skin is damaged? The short answer is: YES! The Vertical Wellness Spa is the answer.

In the interests of good skin care and avoiding hypo-pigmentation (discoloration of skin), it is strongly advised that you don’t combine overexposure to sun or UV light with electrolysis. If you have recently developed a tan, or if you use tanning booths, it is a good idea to wait for your skin to repair. If your skin is naturally dark, electrolysis will be fine for your skin: the issue with tanned or sun-damaged skin is the combination of the UV radiation damage and the effect of the electrolysis needle combining to distort the natural color of your skin.

In addition to avoiding tanning or sunburn prior to your electrolysis appointment, it’s important not to expose the treated area to the sun for at least 24 hours after treatment. Preferably, you will be able to keep the affected area out of the sun for at least 48 hours. All treated hair follicles will be slightly inflamed and more open than normal, meaning that the area that underwent electrolysis will be more vulnerable to bacteria and pathogens. If the area is going to be exposed to sunlight, it is more important than ever to protect the skin with high caliber sunscreen. A broad-spectrum sunscreen, one which provides protection from UVA and UVB rays is preferable. Under no circumstances should you expose the skin to a tanning lamp or infrared warming lamp for at least two and preferably three days.

What About Laser Hair Removal?

Looking for laser hair removal in Century City? You are not alone. Laser hair removal is one of the most commonly done cosmetic procedures in the U.S. Nearly 1 million laser hair removal treatments were performed in the U.S. last year, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). However, new statistics prove that the procedure is becoming even more popular, especially among women. The global laser hair removal market size was valued at USD 443.84 million in 2020 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20.6% from 2021 to 2028. At The Vertical Wellness Spa, we specialize in permanent hair removal, and would like to educate you about laser hair removal and why we choose to offer electrolysis in Los Angeles instead.

However, you cannot be a candidate for laser if:

You are pregnant: Although laser hair removal is generally considered a safe procedure, doctors and dermatologists usually advise women to avoid the procedure because no studies have been done to prove that it’s safe for mothers and babies.

You have a tattoo in the area where you would like to remove hair: Laser hair removal should not be done over a tattoo. While the laser will effectively remove the hair over a tattoo, they will also cause some unwanted and painful side effects. Lasers can reduce up to 75% of the color in tattoos and cause the lines to blur. This is especially true to black and gray tattoos.

You have blond hair: Most laser technology associated with hair removal relies on a contrast between the skin tone and pigment in the hair to affect an area. When there is an insufficient contrast, such as with fair hair and light skin, burns and other side effects can occur.

You have dark skin and dark hair: similarly to blond hair on light skin, if you have dark hair and dark skin, the laser technology will likely not work, due to the lack of contrast between the skin color and hair color.

Electrolysis is the only FDA approved permanent hair removal method. Electrolysis works on all skin tones and hair colors. Electrolysis is highly effective on all body parts, including eyebrows.

If you have pursued laser therapy in the past and are dissatisfied with the results, you may want to switch to electrolysis. Many of our clients come to our electrolysis studio after trying laser hair removal in Century City, only to see the hair grow back.
